Tunes from Newfoundland and Labrador

Fall 2024

Starting Tuesday, October 1, 2024, Christina Smith will be teaching an online course of Newfoundland tunes! The course is open to intermediate and advanced players on any melody instrument playable in the key of D. Participants will learn 8 unique and interesting tunes, exploring the styles and the repertoires of Mrs. Belle Fennelly, Emile Benoit, Rufus Guinchard, Jack Fitzpatrick, Frank Maher, Minnie White and more.

Date/Time:

  • 8PM-9PM NT (6:30PM-7:30PM Eastern)

    NOTE: If the course is oversubscribed (over 12 people) we may split the class into two sections, the first running at 7:00 PM and the second at 8:15.

  • The eight classes are scheduled to take place Tuesdays on October 1, 8, 15, 22 (not Oct 29th), November 5, 12, 19, 26.

Cost: $120 (standard fee), $100 (low-income/underemployed) and $140 (supporter) for the series of eight classes.

Materials: PDFs of the sheet music and tabs for each of the tunes will posted on the “Materials” webpage (follow this link) along with audio recordings of the tunes at a slow tempo for learning. The password to the Materials page, and the Zoom link, will be sent to you upon registration.

If you miss a class: the classes will be recorded and the links sent to participants to use for catch-up or review, for the duration of the course.
