Jean Hewson

- Director

Jean Hewson believes that a community’s soul can be revealed, in part, through its folksongs. They provide a glimpse into tragedies and triumphs of the past, diversions and entertainments of the present, and visions and dreams of the future.

For more than 40 years, Jean has collected, arranged and performed the folk music of Newfoundland and Labrador, and is grateful for the many opportunities the music has given her. She has had the good fortune to play and tour with some of the province’s best-known traditional musicians, and has spent most of her life teaching, and working with organizations focused on music education and the passing on of the tradition.

Soundbone Folksong Choir is an extension of her work with the Vinland Music Camp: a unique annual camp devoted to the traditional arts of Newfoundland and Labrador. Her hope is that the choir will feel like a gathering of old friends gathered around a campfire, enjoying good company, laughter, and some great music.

Madison Mouland

- Assistant

Madison is a folk musician from Musgrave Harbour, Notre Dame Bay, presently completing her fourth year as a voice major at the Memorial University School of Music. Although she studies and performs classical music at school, Madison is a folk musician at heart and typically performs traditional music from the ages. Madison has been singing and playing guitar for many years, and has been involved with Soundbone’s Cultural Ambassador Program, performing for seniors, doing workshops with children and performing at other various venues. In her spare time, she also loves to paint and make crafts. She hopes to become a school music teacher in the future, sharing her love of music with children.
