Celtic Ukulele - Fall 2021

Eric West is offering two online workshop series in playing Celtic music on the ukulele this fall.

This 8-week series (offered via Zoom) will offer a cross-section of tunes from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Newfoundland. Besides well-known songs such as Danny Boy, Morning Has Broken and The Petty Harbour Bait Skiff, you will learn some less familiar ones including a couple of Celtic Christmas carols.  You’ll learn the melodies and accompaniments to all the tunes.

The classes will be divided into two groups:

(a) Beginner/Intermediate Ukulele will include songs played mostly in the first position (i.e. using the first 4 frets of the ukulele). The accompaniments will use standard versions of the chords.  You will also learn some easy scales, strums and arpeggios.  Note: this class is not for absolute beginners –  participants should already be able play common ukulele chords and pick some simple melodies.

(b) Intermediate/Advanced Ukulele will incorporate more advanced playing, involving the higher positions. We’ll cover scales and modes using different positions as well as slurs, strums, arpeggios, ornamentation and fingerpicking patterns.  Most of the tunes will be arranged in two different keys so participants can choose which version best suits their technical level.

  • Group (a): 11:00AM-12:00PM NT; Group (b): 1:00-2:00PM NT

  • Sundays: October 3, 17, 24, 31, November 7, 21, 28 and December 5, 2021
